Tenerife – November 2 – 9, 2013
Tenerife is the largest of the Spanish Canary Islands located approximately 800 miles southwest of the mainland. Its climate and incredible scenery afford the perfect place for Americans to wind up the cycling year before winter arrives. Pond Hoppers has put together an excellent cycling adventure and cultural experience with assistance from two Canarian cyclists. Our Canarian friends will provide close van support, which will be invaluable as not everyone will choose to climb the 7,000 feet from the coast to the base of Teide, the third largest volcano in the world, the highest elevation in Spain, and part of a national park and World Heritage Site. While in the park we will stay at the Parador del Teide, the park’s only hotel and infamous as the hotel of Lance and Contador. Team Sky trains in the park during the early season before cycling weather arrives in the rest of Europe. Riding the climb to the park is reminiscent of some Hawaiian ascents, but the undulating road through the national park is unlike any other. We will also be taking a short ferry ride from Tenerife to enjoy the island of La Gomera, another World Heritage Site. Daily cycling distances will vary between 60 and 120 kilometers.
Ground transport on Tenerife, hotels, all breakfasts, dinners and bikes will be included. We are confident that participants will be satisfied with the bikes and we can provide specifics. Riders are welcome to bring their own bikes if they choose and there will be options for bike case transport and storage. The cost of the trip is $1,950, whether you use one of the provided bikes or bring your own. Flights, alcohol and travel insurance (highly recommended) are not included. We recommend flying with Iberia through Madrid, which is quite easy. The Tenerife trip is limited to fourteen participants – if you are interested in joining us, please contact us by email as soon as possible.
